The first-graders enjoyed a long hike with Mr. Kinney as they explored rocks and minerals throughout campus.
Our journey took us from one large rock formation right on campus, which showed us an example of sedimentary rocks to the woods and trails on campus. During our time with Mr. Kinney, the first-graders learned about types of rocks, minerals, coal, plants and cool animals found on and around campus. The class learned about coal, caves and their inhabitants, as well as general history of the school and how the physical characteristics of the campus have changed over time.
To end our adventures, the kids got to "call" Bigfoot, in hopes to get his attention. In reality, their calls resulted in mustering the beautiful calls of the birds nearby. Our last stop was back to the original rock formation we had visited in order to test out the rocks' ability to draw and make cool colors on the pavement. It was a great morning!
