During their exploratory time, the third-, fourth- and fifth-graders learned some interesting facts about cinco de mayo. Did you know cinco de mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day (that's on September 16)?!
Cinco de mayo commemorates the Batalla de Puebla when a small Mexican army defeated an invasion from a much larger French army led by Napolean. Cinco de mayo is not widely celebrated in Mexico, and in the U.S. the holiday has become a way for Mexican Americans to celebrate their heritage.
