Junior Emily Orr has been selected to attend the 2016 Georgia Governor's Honors Program and participate in the Communicative Arts track.
Before being chosen for the program, Orr went through an extensive application and selection process that included submitting an essay, recommendations, transcripts and standardized test scores. She was also required to successfully progress through interviews during the semi-finalist round.
The Georgia Governor’s Honors Program is a residential summer experience for gifted and talented rising high school juniors and seniors. The program offers instruction that is significantly different from the typical high school classroom and that is designed to provide students with academic, cultural, and social enrichment necessary to become the next generation of global critical thinkers, innovators and leaders.
This year’s program will be held at Valdosta State University from June 19 to July 16.
Orr completed the Journalism course as a part of Darlington’s Media Arts program last year, and is currently taking Introduction to Media Arts. She serves as the managing editor of The Darlingtonian, and will assume the role of editor-in-chief for the 2016-17 school year.
"Emily cares a lot about Darlington and about building a program that leaves a legacy," said Adrienne Forgette, Media Arts director. "She really wants to make sure that Student Publications has a student voice and stays authentic."
The Rome native holds membership in the Quill and Scroll journalism honor society, National Honor Society and Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica. Orr also serves on Darlington’s Honor Council and Servant Leadership team, and as an Admission Tiger Expert. She is also a member of the varsity lacrosse team and World Languages Club. Outside of Darlington, Orr is currently in the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce's High School Leadership Rome class, and is a member of the youth chapter of NAACP.
"Emily is a scholar athlete and takes a very rigorous academic schedule. She cares very deeply about doing her best in all of her classes," added Forgette. "She balances leadership positions too, and with that comes a lot."
In addition to the Governor’s Honors Program this summer, Orr will also be participating as a junior staff member in the Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership camp at Berry College.
