Incoming freshmen Olivia Harper of Rome and Marissa Joseph of Acworth, Ga., have been named the recipients of the 2015 Darlington Honor Scholarships. This full-tuition award is given to one freshman day applicant and one freshman boarding applicant each year.

“The Honor Scholarship is the most prestigious merit award offered by Darlington, and we are proud of Olivia and Marissa for the countless hours of hard work and dedication that earned them this achievement,” said Derek Perkins, director of admission. “I am confident that each of these students is a great fit for Darlington and will make long-lasting contributions to our school community. I look forward to welcoming them to campus this fall.”

Harper is an eighth-grader at St. Mary’s Catholic School, where she is a member of Student Council, Junior Beta Club, International Junior Thespian Society and the math team. She plays drums and serves as the secretary of Floyd County 4-H, having won first place for the last two years with her 4-H District Achievement Project. Harper will also be appearing in the upcoming Rome Shakespeare Festival. She is the younger sister of current student Hannah ('15).

"I feel so honored that I would even be considered for such a prestigious award. I'm grateful not only to Darlington, but to the other influences in my life like my parents, friends and teachers that shaped me," said Harper. "I am very excited about coming to Darlington. I already know some of students and the teachers."

Joseph currently attends Sammy McClure Middle School and is a member of Junior Beta Club. She has also had the great opportunity to sing in Large Group Performance Evaluation (LGPE) festival choir. Outside of school, she is a member of the Duke Talent Identification Program and plays club volleyball.

"This scholarship award is such an honor. When I first came and visited the campus one of the things I enjoyed most was the feeling of community here," said Joseph. "I am most excited about joining the Darlington family, because I come from a smaller community and I truly believe it takes a village to raise someone."

Established in 2011 as a result of Darlington’s Second Century Campaign, the Honor Scholarship covers tuition, room and board, books, and any other materials and fees. It is renewable annually for the length of the student’s career at Darlington as long as certain requirements are met.
