Barbara Barfield teaches Middle School Spanish and previously taught Lower School Spanish, a program she started in 1999. She holds a B.B.A. from Georgia State University, and an M.Ed. from Berry College. During her time at Darlington, Barfield has also worked as a court interpreter. Barfield's other experience includes teaching at Berry College Elementary School and teaching Distance Learning- Spanish in the Floyd County School System.

How long have you taught at Darlington?
I have taught at Darlington for a total of 14 years. This is my sixth year since coming back in 2009.

Why did you become a teacher?
Initially I went into teaching so that I could have my son's schedule and so that I could see what and how he was learning. Being a single parent and working in the corporate world was not going to work for me.

What is your favorite part of teaching?
My favorite part of teaching is watching students have that "A-ha!'' moment and watching them be successful!! After that, I like watching them "play" with their Spanish.

What do you love most about teaching at Darlington?
I love the relationships that are formed at Darlington, whether they be with my students, the parents or my peers. It's great to hear from former students and to see what they are doing with their lives!

What are three words you would use to describe Darlington?
Three words to describe Darlington would be spirited, memorable and challenging.

What is the most important lesson you have learned in life?
The most important lesson in life that I've learned is to slow down and not be too judgmental. One never truly knows what's going on in a person's life and how this may affect the way they are in the moment.

What is your most treasured experience, or memory in life?
My most treasured experience or memory in life, apart from the birth of my son, was being able to go and stand in the middle of Machu Picchu. It was at the top of my bucket list for so long. Walking around, I couldn't help but wonder whose Incan footsteps I was tracing, how incredible the the ruin was, the mysteries of the hows and whys of it all. It was all so surreal. I hope to go back one day! Did I mention I'm accepting frequent-flier miles??

Where is “home?"
I would have to say Rome is "home." It's the one place I've lived the longest.

Which Spanish-speaking countries have you traveled to?
I've been to the following Spanish speaking countries:
Spain, Chile, Peru, Ecuador (thanks to the Thatcher Grant!), Mexico, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Cuba. I'm currently accepting any frequent-flier miles to help me add to this list.
