Purple Tie Affair: ‘We are Doing This for Our Children’

The Junior-Senior Prom is one of many events sponsored by Upper School Tiger Pride. Here, Hanna Grevelius ('14) and Lauri Hacklin ('14) walk in the Senior Lead Out.

Below is a blog written by Upper School Tiger Pride President Nancy Goldin about the upcoming Purple Tie Affair on Aug. 16. Check it out and make plans to attend this great event! Click here to purchase your tickets online.

When Anne Paige Wilson asked me to write a blog about why we should ALL support the Purple Tie Affair, I panicked! I have not written a paper since college and it's been a long time since I edited my oldest daughter, Betsy's, freshman English essays. That being said, as the mother of four past and current Darlington Upper School students, I am going to attempt to persuade you to attend the Purple Tie Affair.

As a parent, why wouldn't you want to go? It's FUN! You get to be with old friends and meet new folks who are the parents of your kid's friends. (I still think this is very important and am a little old fashioned in that we really want to know the families our kids are hanging out with.) But really, an auction with great food and drinks, the rush of friendly bidding wars, and tons of silent and live auction items.  What's NOT to love?!

As a parent who has worked on many school auctions, I know how much time and work is involved in making this fabulous night happen.  It's a tremendous gift that our fellow parents are giving us by working all summer to make this night happen.

This fundraiser is critically important to our children at Darlington. It fills in the gaps in a very real way in our budget. In the Upper School, the money that we raise goes directly to help fund many wonderful Darlington traditions, including the Back-to-School Bash, holiday campus decorations, Teacher Appreciation Week, the Junior-Senior Prom, Baccalaureate and faculty grants, to name a few. Upper School Tiger Pride really does sponsor and pay for these events!

So get a group of your friends (old and new), put together a table, and buy dinner  tickets! We are doing this for our children! I promise you are going to have a ball with your friends while supporting your kids.  Faculty, staff and alumni are welcome, too. Please come and raise your paddle and show our wonderful faculty and children that we will do whatever it takes to make LOTS of money. Be generous! Buy your Christmas, Easter, birthday, Father's Day, Mother's Day and baby shower gifts! It is a wonderful time to stock up for the year on great items, services, vacation homes and events that people in our community have generously donated.

Last, but certainly not least, BUY  A REVERSE RAFFLE TICKET. For $100, you have the chance to win $10,000 or up to $18,000 tuition credit for your oldest child. Only 350 tickets are sold and these are fabulous odds. Please help us SELL raffle tickets! They are so easy to sell. After all, who doesn't want a chance to win?!

So, put on your purple, grab your friends and come support your school! You won't be sorry -- it will be a magical evening of  community, fellowship and marvelous  memories. See you on the 16th!
