As I officially embark on my work as Head of School at Darlington, I sit at my desk and reflect on why I am here. The answers that come to mind are varied.
Of course, my family played the biggest role in the decision to make our home here. But it is also the result of my background, aspirations and values; the wonderful students I have met here, who impressed me on day one; the robust programming and 21st Century curriculum; the facilities and scope of this beautiful campus; and the great people who have dedicated their careers to helping students achieve success at Darlington, in college and beyond.
I am fortunate to possess a very special book given to me by the 2013-2014 Harrison’s Heroes (Rachel Harrison’s first-grade students) titled “A Heroes' Guide for the Headmaster.” This book -- and its timely advice -- serve as one more reminder that schools are for children and that “they are why” we do what we do.
I will cherish all of their advice, but I thought for this first edition of my blog series -- which will have the overarching theme “This is Why” -- I would share a few favorites…
- A good headmaster cares about everyone and is responsible.
- A good headmaster has to be a leader, and he should always be nice and fun.
- A good headmaster takes people where they want to go.
- A good headmaster shows love even when it is hard.
- A good headmaster respects others.
- And from the class spider, John David, a good headmaster isn’t scared to hold me or bring me home.
So as we embark on this wonderful journey together, I wanted to take this time to reflect and say thank you to the Harrison’s Heroes for their great ideas and words. (Our youngest son, Brent, will actually be a Harrison’s Hero this coming school year!) The Heroes’ thoughts -- which I have also heard from people that have been heads of school for over 20 years! -- are a great reminder of the confidence we must have in our children. They deserve our trust and our very best efforts.
Thank you all for the warm welcome to Darlington. Andrea, our boys, and I can’t wait to get to know the members of our new school family.
I got to spend some time with the Harrison Heroes and their class spider, John David, during one of my visits to Darlington earlier this year.
