Outstanding students in grades ELA-7 were honored Wednesday, May 14, during a special recognition ceremony in the Van Es Arena of the Huffman Athletic Center.
Citizenship Awards were given to K4 student Jay Watters, K5 student Sam Parish, first-grader Emma Hunt, second-grader Jackson Peer, third-grader Hattie James Lester, fourth-grader Grace Himes, fifth-grader Knox Sirmans, sixth-grader Frank Manning and seventh-grader Jack Eady.
Passion for Learning Awards were given to K4 student Sara Shropshire, K5 student Aryana Patel, first-grader Angeline Myrie and second-grader Charlie May. In third grade, Harrison Manis received a Passion Award for Reading, Lilly Anne McClaine for Math and Bradley Smith for Science. In fourth grade, Rhada Miniyar received a Passion Award for Reading, Ibilola Esho for Math and Eli Mayes for Science. In fifth grade, Garrett Price received a Passion Award for Reading, Luke McDurmon for Math and Cappie May for Science.
Fourth-grader Mary Mac Pittman received the Lola C. Bradshaw Spirit of Life Award, established by her son, Martin H. “Tripp” Bradshaw III (’85), and endowed through gifts made to Darlington in memory and in honor of Lola’s years of unselfish service by her family, friends and former students. This award is given annually to the Lower School student who best exemplifies through attitude and actions both inside and outside the classroom, the highest spirit for life, love for learning, and unselfishness toward others.
Fifth-grader Ashlyn Woods received the Teresa (Huffman) Watters ’72 Student Achievement Award. Established by Mr. and Mrs. William Huffman (’40) in honor of their daughter, Teresa Huffman Watters (’72T), who taught at the Lower School for 23 years. The award is presented annually to a fourth-grade student who has exhibited growth in character which distinguishes him or her from others; growth in developing self-discipline by being responsible in all areas; growth in the desire for learning by working beyond expectations; growth in morals by discerning right from wrong; growth in friendships by being considerate of all, regardless of their differences; and growth in becoming a solid person and student who should be proud of him or herself.
In fifth grade, the Library Award went to Cora Linos, the Spanish Award to Ricky Frisiani, the Strings Award to Knox Sirmans, the Sportsmanship Award to Patrick Shealy, the Music Award to Caroline McRay, the Art Award to Amanda Buzzetti and the Band Award to Ivy Watters.
