First-graders had a great time building boats for their STEM project this week. The students were put into pairs and were given a cup, pipe cleaners, popsicle sticks, aluminum foil, notecards and duct tape. Each pair had to discuss and draw a sketch of the boat they wanted to build. Once they figured out which materials they wanted to use, they started constructing. The children then put their boats to the test, seeing if they would float in a tub of water. If they were unsuccessful, they had the opportunity to fix their boat and try again.
