It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of 1996 Distinguished Alumnus and dedicated community member Tom Cousins (’48) on July 29. He was a true embodiment of Darlington's values and led his life like Darlington’s motto service beyond self by upholding an unwavering commitment to the Atlanta community.

A day student from Rome, Tom attended Darlington his junior and senior years. After graduation, he went on to attend the University of Georgia and make his home in Atlanta. He leaves a legacy in Atlanta as both a real estate developer and philanthropist, transforming the city through his work in both areas.

Among his many contributions, he co-founded Purpose Built Communities, a nonprofit organization that aimed to replicate Cousin's East Lake model of community redevelopment within other cities and areas throughout the United States. As of 2021, Purpose Built Communities was present in 15 states, including in the South Rome area of Rome, Ga., surrounding his alma mater, Darlington School.

Tom remained dedicated to Darlington throughout his life. He was a member of the J.J. Darlington Society and also participated in Darlington’s Second Century Campaign.

In 1995, Tom delivered the Commencement address where he gifted each graduate a share of Cousins stock worth $17.50 at the time to help them remember their time together. In 1996, he was honored as Darlington’s Distinguished Alumnus during Alumni Weekend.

As we mourn the loss of Tom Cousins, we will remember him, without question, a confident contributor. He was not only successful in work and in life, he made his community a better place through his vision and philanthropy.
