Senior Ventures Spotlight: Luke McDurmon

My Senior Ventures project involves exploring the effects of sleep loss on the human body. I will complete research and discover the answers to the following questions:

  • What is the right amount of sleep for different age groups?
  • What effect does losing a night's sleep have on the body?
  • How many days does it take to recover from missed sleep?
  • Is too much sleep bad for you?
  • Are shorter naps better than long naps, and how do naps impact sleep later?
  • How do you get the best sleep?
  • Does going to sleep late but still getting normal sleep matter?
  • What is the best position for sleeping?
  • What are dreams and why do we have them?
  • Does eating right before you go to bed affect your sleep?
  • How does not sleeping impact your health and wellness?
  • How does using electronics before you fall asleep impact how well you rest?

I really find this topic interesting because I often find myself awake at 2 a.m. the night before a big game or test, and I really want to know how this will affect my performance the following day. Additionally, I want to share my findings with others who may find themselves in the same situation so I can provide them with a solution. My goal will also be to find answers to problems which our diverse community at Darlington shares. I will survey the students and faculty to determine questions they want answered.

Throughout the school year, I will create several vodcasts (video podcasts) using the studio in the media arts room. The research and information I have gained through surveying the Darlington Community will be included in my vodcasts. My mentors are Coach Kevin Hunt and Coach Anna Swafford.

The Senior Ventures leadership program is a year-long senior project built on a framework of leadership, innovation, and community engagement. The topic and the project design are chosen by an individual student or a pair of students, and the journey is guided by Darlington faculty as well as mentors in the community. Most projects fall into one of the following categories: Investigation, Performance, Entrepreneurship, and Outreach. Candidates are selected according to proposal quality, feasibility, and commitment.
