Darlington to host blood drive in Joan Jones’ honor

October 3, 2016 | 360 views

Darlington School will host a blood drive on Thursday, Oct. 6, in honor of Joan Jones, mother of Nicholas Jones (‘17). The Blood Assurance Blood Vessel will be located at the steps of the McCallie-Kennedy Upper School Library from 2 to 7 p.m. for those who wish to donate.

In early July, Joan was diagnosed with endometrial cancer and had a complete hysterectomy one month later. Post-surgery biopsies revealed that she actually had uterine cancer, requiring additional tests and scans.

Based on the initial misdiagnosis and additional concerns, second opinions for cancer treatment were sought. Joan and her family are currently weighing all options and will soon decide what plan of action makes the most sense for her treatment. She is tentatively planning to undergo chemotherapy and radiation treatment.

“Although my family is the one being put in the spotlight for this blood drive, I know of other families at Darlington who are dealing with cancer-related serious medical issues,” said Nicholas. “I would like to say that while I am very honored that everyone is going out of their way for us, there are others who are fighting quietly.”

Those wishing to give blood in Joan Jones’ name must be 16 years or older; 16-year-olds must have written consent from a parent or guardian. Those wishing to sign up in advance can do so by contacting Servant Leadership Director Reba Barnes.
