Breaking the Bread: A Thanksgiving Reflection

Breaking bread together has its roots in ancient Jewish traditions. It was the first act after the blessing of a meal—a literal breaking of bread—symbolizing a break in the day’s work and the start of fellowship with friends and family.

Last week, I gathered my advisee family to break bread together before they scattered to spend the holidays with their families or in the homes of their friends. Today’s fast-paced culture too often excuses us to pass over quality time with our families sitting at a table, sharing a meal and talking with one another about funny things remembered, things we look forward to, and even the mundane things that we had to get done in our day.

At my dinner table last Sunday night was my advisee family. They hail from Rome, Atlanta, Jamaica, Arkansas and Colorado. My three children were there (a treat to have the oldest home from college), along with my faculty friend, Crystal Cleveland. It was family night. We laughed, we joked, we ate a homemade meal and yes, literally broke the bread—lingering at the table well after the food was gone.

I love what each of my advisees brings to the table. They are different from one another, but supportive of one another. They are funny, sarcastic, athletic, artistic, poetic, kind, thoughtful and wise in their own right.

In this season of Thanksgiving, I say "Thank you" to their first families for sharing them with us here at Darlington, and wish you well as you break bread with your own families this next week. Happy Thanksgiving!
