The Middle School honored several outstanding students Thursday, May 20, at the Final Assembly in the Middle School Courtyard.
Eighth-graders Bethany Cagle and Chas Williams, both of Rome, received the James Ross McCain Award, the most prestigious award given at the Middle School. Recipients have demonstrated outstanding leadership ability in all areas of school life, but most importantly in the areas of academic, social, physical and spiritual leadership. These students best exemplify the characteristics of honor, independence and integrity, which are fundamentally essential qualities of leadership.
Eighth-graders Arden Babb of Rome and David Thoms of Kingston, Ga., received the M. Hugh Merson Memorial Award, given to the student whose pursuit of excellence in all areas of school life best serves as an example to his fellow students, and who best represents the virtues of character, which Mr. Hugh Merson sought to instill in his students.
Eighth-grader Will Mathis of Rome received the Robert Walther Jr. Memorial Award, given to an eighth-grader who has exhibited the strongest degree of concern and respect for his fellow students, and has rendered unselfish service to the school.
Eighth-grader Anna Kate Dulaney of Rome received the Mary Alice Babcock Memorial Award, given to an eighth-grade student who has demonstrated a compassionate and caring attitude to fellow students, who is helpful, friendly, and thoughtful, and who generally places the welfare of others above his/her own.
Eighth-grader Hannah Mae Deems of Taylorsville, Ga., received the Huffman Family Scholarship, established by William M. Huffman Jr. (’67) in honor of William M. Huffman Sr. (’40) and awarded to a rising ninth-grade student who exemplifies academic excellence, character and devotion to the school.
Eighth-grader Rostam Zafari of Cartersville, Ga., received the George A. Dorsey Memorial Award, given in loving remembrance of George Andrew Dorsey, longtime teacher who example of gentleness and concern deeply influenced decades of Darlington students and faculty. This award recognizes that student who is distinguished by his or her own quest for the knowledge and love of living things.
Eighth-grader Logan Rice of Rome received the Raymond Nora Memorial Award, given to football player who best exemplifies leadership, spirit and cooperation.
Eighth-grader Chandler Johnson of Rome received the DAR Good Citizenship Medal, given to the eighth-grade student who has exhibited honor, service, leadership, courage and patriotism.
Eighth-graders Maggie Beth Atha of Rome and Bo Tucker of Cedar Bluff, Ala., received the John W. Maddox Athletic Achievement Award, given to the best all-round athlete.
Eighth-grader Maggie Beth Atha of Rome; sixth-grader Jade Cox of Rome; seventh-grader Spencer Fields of Kingston, Ga.; seventh-grader Jazlyn Green of Rome; sixth-grader Bob Ledbetter of Rome; eighth-grader Johnny Malone of Lindale; fifth-grader Luke Parker of Summerville, Ga.; and fifth-grader Avery Smith of Rome received Parents Association Student Awards, given by grade level to students who have proved to be an overall friend to the School and its students by loyalty, kindness, attendance, allegiance and other good citizen attitudes.

Eighth-grader Theo Welch of Rome was named Most Outstanding Woodwind Instrumentalist and received the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award.
Eighth-grader David Thoms of Kingston, Ga., was named Most Outstanding Brass Instrumentalist.
Eighth-grader Sammi Harton of Cartersville, Ga., was named Most Outstanding Percussionist.
Eighth-grader Arden Babb of Rome was named Most Outstanding String Instrumentalist.
Eighth-grader Logan Griffiths of Rome received the Director’s Award for Leadership.
Seventh-grader Nick Shealy of Cartersville, Ga., received the Service Beyond Self Award.
Eighth-graders Carissa Duvall of Cartersville, Ga.; Anna Kate Dulaney of Rome; and Emily Thurmond of Rome received Three-Year Service Awards. Thurmond and Dulaney also received Spirit Awards, while Duvall received a Leadership Award.
Eighth-grader Lindsey Vaughn of Acworth, Ga., received the Perseverance Award.
