Fifth-grader Bethany Cagle was named winner of the Lower School's first annual National Geographic Bee Thursday, Jan. 11. Runners up included fifth-grader David Thoms (2nd place), third-grader Anna Claire Atha (3rd place), and fifth-grader Sarah Cait Hubbard.
To prepare for the GeoBee, students were encouraged to watch the nightly world news broadcasts, read books and magazine articles about other lands and people, and study maps. Additionally, National Geographic has a daily GeoBee Challenge on their Web site that provides practice with probable questions from the contest.
After classroom competitions in grades 3-5, the five students with the top scores in each classroom moved on to the school-wide contest. Each competitor received a certificate of participation.
As first place winner, Cagle will be tested to compete at a higher level. She is the daughter of Hillary Cagle and Larry Cagle, both of Rome.
