After being named a finalist in the school, club, zone and area levels of the Rome Breakfast Optimist Club Oratorical Contest, seventh-grader Brisha Askew will compete at the district level May 6 in Helen, Ga. Click here to read the full text of her speech.

“I am very proud of Brisha for winning area," said Nancy Ivester, English teacher. “All of the speeches were excellent, so she had some stiff competition.”

A preliminary round of the oratorical contest was held in February at the Middle School. Participants included sixth-graders Ansley McDurmon and Hiram Johnson; seventh-graders Askew, Jason Bloom, Ali Harton, Chandler Holcombe, Tre’ Langston, Zach Martin, Will Thoms and Jesse Tutor; and eighth-grader Morgan Reynolds. This year’s topic was “My Future is Bright Because …”

The top three girl and boy contestants were Askew, Harton and McDurmon and Bloom, Johnson and Martin, respectively. These students competed against Pepperell at the Floyd County Board of Education on March 14 to determine who would move on to zone level. Both Askew and Bloom competed at zone.
