Seniors awarded college scholarships

The following Darlington seniors have received college scholarships for the 2005-06 academic year:

Gray Allen has been awarded a $4,000 scholarship from the College of Charleston. She is the daughter of Dr. Ben and Roberta Allen of Albemarle, N.C.

Megan Betts has been awarded a $500 Athletic Award from Rome Floyd County Sports Hall of Fame. She is the daughter of Tommy and Darla Betts of Rome, Ga.

Lauren Bowling has been awarded a $48,000 Adiel Sherwood Scholarship and a $22,000 College of Liberal Arts Scholarship from Mercer University. She has also been awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the University of Alabama. Bowling is the daughter of Dr. Ernie and Karen Bowling of Rome, Ga.

Payton Bradford has been awarded the UGA Foundation Fellowship, which provides a full scholarship to the University of Georgia. This merit award is renewable for four years of undergraduate study. He also received the Ramsey Honors Scholarship in the amount of $32,000 from UGA, the Presidential Academic Scholarship in the amount of $72,000 from George Washington University and has been named a University of Virginia Echols Scholar. Bradford is the son of Beth Bradford of Rome.

Christine Burnham has been awarded Brevard College’s Beam Scholarship in the amount of $4,500 per year. This scholarship is awarded in honor of benefactors C. Grier and Lena Sue Beam to an entering freshman who has illustrated outstanding academic preparation, and is renewable for four years of undergraduate enrollment. She has also been awarded a $7,000 scholarship from Birmingham-Southern College, an $8,000 scholarship from West Virginia University, and a $6,000 Lafayette Scholarship from LaGrange College, all of which are also renewable for four years. Burnham is the daughter of Rev. Timothy and Charlene Burnham of Silver Creek, Ga.

Jae Byun has been awarded a $6,000 scholarship from Indiana University at Bloomington. He is the son of Dr. Hyung Sub and Ae Lee Byun of the Republic of Korea.

Erica Clem has been awarded a $56,000 Faculty Scholarship from Hobart & William Smith Colleges (N.Y.) and a $28,000 Dean’s Scholarship from the University of Denver. She is the daughter of Andrew and Sandy Clem of Sewickley, Pa.

Zach Daniel has been awarded a $38,000 Trustee Scholarship from Birmingham-Southern College. He is the son of Bill and Lynda Daniel of Birmingham, Ala.

Kristin Fulton has been awarded a $44,000 merit scholarship from Merrimack College (Mass.). She is the daughter of Robert and Robin Fulton of Hilton Head Island, S.C.

Ana Glass has been awarded a Rhodes Award of totaling $30,000 over four years from Rhodes College. She was also awarded Hollins University’s Creative Talent Award in the amount of $8,000 per year and Agnes Scott College’s Honor Scholarship in the amount of $48,000 over four years. Glass is the daughter of Dr. Jeff and Ann Glass of Rome, Ga.

Leslie Goldberg has been awarded the Trustee Distinguished Scholarship from Rice University in the amount of $48,000. She is the daughter of Dr. Neal and Barbara Goldberg of Rome, Ga.

Brandon Goodman has been awarded a $16,000 Tisch Scholarship from New York University. He is the son of Hazelle Goodman of Flushing, N.Y.

Beau Griffith has been awarded the Dean’s Scholar Award and an Academic Achievement Scholarship totaling $112,000 from Vanderbilt University. He has also been awarded a $12,000 Dean’s Scholarship from the University of Rochester (N.Y.) and a $20,000 Century Out-of-State Scholarship and $8,000 merit scholarship from the University of Cincinnati. Griffith is the son of Bill and Marie Griffith of Rome, Ga.

Davis Grizzard has been awarded a University Freshman Scholarship of $8,000 by Florida State University. He is the son of Vernon and Carol Grizzard of Rome.

Allison Harbin has been awarded a $56,000 Josiah Penfield Scholarship and an $8,000 Achievement Award from Mercer University. Mercer will also provide her with a laptop computer for her studies. Harbin has also been awarded an Eckerd College Honors Scholarship in the amount of $40,000 and a $40,000 Presidential Scholarship from Rhodes College. She is the daughter of Dr. Frank and Anne Harbin of Rome, Ga.

Caroline Holbrook has been awarded a University Scholarship in the amount of $8,000 per year from Mercer University. This renewable merit award is for eight semesters of undergraduate study. She has also been awarded a $7,500 annual Founder’s Award from Hollins University, which is also renewable for four years. Holbrook is the daughter of Cay Holbrook of Rome, Ga.

Kelly Hoyt has been awarded a $27,200 merit scholarship from Berry College. She is the daughter of Alexandra Hoyt of Kennesaw, Ga.

Kim King has been awarded an annual scholarship of $1,250 from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. This scholarship is renewable for eight semesters of undergraduate study. She was also named a Josiah Penfield Scholar at Mercer University, qualifying her to receive $14,000 annually and a laptop computer. King is the daughter of Bill and Lou King of Rome, Ga.

Ford Knight has been awarded $13,000 in merit scholarships from the University of Mississippi. He has also been awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the University of Alabama. He is the son of Jack and Nancy Knight of Rome, Ga.

Kristin Kountz has been awarded a $92,440 scholarship from Centre College (Ky.) and Wofford College’s Charles E. Daniel Scholarship in the amount of $124,000. She has also been named a Furman Scholar and selected to receive a half-tuition Founders Scholarship in the amount of $63,776. Kountz is the daughter of Dr. Paul and Judi Kountz of Rome, Ga.

Jonathan Lane has been awarded a National Buckeye Scholarship in the amount of $6,600 per year and a Buckeye Community Scholarship in the amount of $600 per year by Ohio State University. Both scholarships are renewable for four years of undergraduate study. Lane is the son of Gilbert and Cindy Lane of Silver Creek, Ga.

Alex Lawson has been awarded a $40,000 Jacksonville University Academic Scholarship. He is the son of Hugh and Kathryn Lawson of Kinston, Jamaica.

Barton Lowrey has been awarded the 2004 Hall of Fame State of Georgia Scholar Athlete Award in the amount of $1,000. The award is sponsored by ChevronTexaco, the Atlanta Falcons Youth Foundation, Gallagher Electric and Engineering Company, Georgia High School Association and the Greater Atlanta Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. He is the son of Drs. Darrell and Rebekah Lowrey of Rome, Ga.

Matthew Maffessanti has been awarded a $3,000 annual scholarship from Jacksonville State University and a $12,500 from Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla. Both awards are renewable for four years of undergraduate study. Maffessanti is the son of Mark and Simonetta Maffessanti of St. James, Jamaica.

Jody Milford has been awarded a Tiger Scholarship in the amount of $10,000 from Louisiana State University. She is the daughter of Joe Milford of Atlanta, Ga.

Brian Miller has been awarded a scholarship in the amount of $8,000 by West Virginia University. He has also been awarded a $24,000 University Scholarship from Mercer University. Miller is the son of Rick and Lynn Miller of Rome, Ga.

Grant Miller has been awarded a $10,000 scholarship to Berry College. He is the son of Rick and Lynn Miller of Rome, Ga.

Anne Montgomery has been awarded a Dean's Scholarship in the amount of $10,000 per year from Stetson University in DeLand, Fla. This award was made on the basis of oustanding academic achievement and is renewable for four years of undergraduate enrollment. She was also awarded Hollins University’s Founder’s Award in the amount of $7,500. Montgomery is the daughter of Joe and Rebekah Montgomery of Rome, Ga.

Lauren Nethery has been awarded a Jonathan Allen Leadership Award in the amount of $8,000 per year from Alfred University. The award is renewable for four years of undergraduate study. Nethery is the daughter of Buddy Nethery of East Ridge, Tenn., and Melissa March of Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Lee Niedrach has been awarded a full scholarship to the University of the South (Sewanee). He is the son of Jack and Mary Niedrach of Rome, Ga.

Bradley Pierson has been awarded Millsaps College’s Second Century Scholarship in the amount of $40,000 and Shorter College’s Alfred Shorter Scholarship in the amount of $24,000. He is the son of Curt and Beth Pierson of Rome, Ga.

Kristen Rachels has been awarded a $26,000 academic scholarship by Barry University in Miami Shores, Fla. The scholarship is renewable for four years of undergraduate study. She was also awarded a $26,000 Hatter Award from Stetson University. Rachels is the daughter of Joe and Linda O’Neal of Broken Arrow, Okla.

Will Raybon has been awarded University Scholarship in the amount of $10,000 by Mercer University. He is the son of Otis and Barbara Raybon of Rome, Ga.

William Richardson has been awarded a $3,000 Academic Excellence Scholarship from The University of Mississippi and a $12,000 Furman Tradition scholarship from Furman University. He is the son of Tom and Tammy Richardson of Rome, Ga.

Kirk Riedling has been named a Josiah Penfield Scholar, and will be awarded $14,000 annually by Mercer University. This award is based on academic credentials and his performance at the Collegiate Fellows Scholarship Competition. Riedling is the son of Suzi Riedling of Rome, Ga.

Jessica Sloan has been awarded a $20,000 Cincinnatus Scholarship from the University of Cincinnati. She is the daughter of Janet Sloan of Cedartown, Ga., and Dr. Michael Sloan of Chicago, Ill.

Lee Spradlin has been awarded a $24,000 Georgetown Alumni Scholarship from Georgetown College (Ky.) He is the son of Collin and Caroline Boyd of Lexington, Ky.

Matthew Stuenkel has been awarded the 21st Century Scholarship in the amount of $1,500 per year from Florida State University in Tallahassee. This award was made in recognition of outstanding academic performance and is renewable for four years of undergraduate enrollment. He has also been awarded the Greesboro Scholarship in the amount of $36,000 from Birmingham-Southern College. Stuenkel is the son of Kurt and Lisa Stuenkel of Rome, Ga.

Haley Tallent has been awarded an $8,000 scholarship from Birmingham-Southern College. She was also awarded a University Scholarship for $32,000 from Mercer University. Tallent is the daughter of Eric and Dianne Tallent of Rockmart, Ga.

Lindsay Templer has been awarded a $8,000 Entrance Scholarship from Carleton University (Ottawa, ON, Canada). She is the daughter of Julian and Sancia Templer of Kingston, Jamaica.

Dung Quoc Tran has been awarded a $48,000 Faculty Award from Indiana University at Bloomington. He is the son of Thanh and Nu Tran of Binh Duong, Vietnam.

Zach Ware has been awarded a $6,000 Academic Excellence Scholarship from the University of Mississippi. He is the son of Dr. Mike and Pam Ware of Rome, Ga.

Will Watters has been awarded the 21st Century Scholarship in the amount of $1,500 per year from Florida State University in Tallahassee. This award was made in recognition of outstanding academic performance and is renewable for four years of undergraduate enrollment. He was also awarded a McKissick Scholars Award of $2,000 per year, renewable for four years, by the University of South Carolina. Watters is the son of Bill and Judy Watters of Rome, Ga.

Sam Wilson has been awarded a full athletic scholarship to the University of Southern Mississippi in the sport of football, totaling approximately $16,250 per year. He is the son of Randy and Betsy Wilson of Destin, Fla.
