Outstanding academic achievement has won senior Barton Lowrey the honor of being named the Noon Optimist Student of the Month for November.

Lowrey, who is ranked No. 19 in his class of 117, has a GPA of 94.93 and an SAT score of 1120. In his four years at the Upper School, he has earned eight honors and three AP credits.

“I have gotten to know Barton over the last year as he comes into the library to do research,” said Madge Crawford, library aide. “He is always so polite and well-mannered. I have three young boys, and I only hope that they will turn out to be as genuine, kind and conscientious as Barton is when they reach high school.”

While at Darlington, Lowrey has been awarded the Parents Association Award and has been a member of the Honor Council (president), National Honor Society, House Senate and Leadership Rome.

“As senior class president, he leads his peers with dignity and strength,” said Crawford. “As Honor Council president, he uses his own integrity to inspire other students to respect the honor code on a daily basis. Not only is he an excellent student, but he also epitomizes the idea, well-rounded student. I would highly recommend this upstanding young man to any college or university.”

In addition to his academic and leadership endeavors, Lowrey has also made time for several extracurricular activities, including varsity and junior varsity football, varsity basketball and varsity lacrosse.

“Barton Lowrey is a very dedicated and self-motivated student athlete,” said Timothy Garrett, physics teacher and basketball coach. “His dedication can easily be seen on the playing fields, where he is the first to arrive at practice and the last to leave. In the four years that I have known Barton, he has matured and become a class leader. His peers respect him for his leadership abilities and his loyalty. He possesses a ‘never give up’ attitude, which is instrumental in his success.”

Lowrey will be honored at a luncheon Monday, Nov. 29, along with Darlington’s Noon Optimist Student of the Month for October, Kristi Buice. He is the son of Drs. Darrell and Becky Lowrey of Rome, Ga.
