Graduates attend 60 colleges, universities; earn over $2.5 million in scholarships: The Honorable Stephen D. Potts ’48 was the speaker for the Darlington’s 97th Commencement Exercises. For 10 years prior to August 2000 when he semi-retired, Potts served as the director of the Office of Government Ethics (OGE). He was originally appointed by President George Bush in 1990 and then reappointed by President Bill Clinton for a second five-year term in 1995. He now serves as chairman of the Fellows Program of the Ethics Resource Center.
As director of OGE, Potts led the executive branch ethics program through significant change. Under his leadership, OGE issued major regulations in the areas of standards of conduct, conflicting financial interests, public and confidential financial disclosure, and ethics training.
Prior to his appointment, Potts was a partner for 29 years in the law firm of Shaw, Pittman, Potts & Trowbridge in Washington, D.C. He has served both as a corporate and civic board member for a number of organizations.
After graduating as salutatorian and receiving the Faculty Medal for Overall Excellence at Darlington School, he graduated cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Vanderbilt University with an A.B. degree in political science in 1952. In 1954, he received a L.L.B. from Vanderbilt Law School.
Potts has also been an avid tennis player, having won five national and one international father/son tennis championships. He was also ranked #1 in the United States for father/son tennis, is a former Tennessee State singles champion and Mason-Dixon singles champion, was a finalist in the Irish National Tennis Championships, and qualified and played in the Wimbledon and U.S. Nationals.
Following the commencement exercises, Potts and his wife flew to Budapest, Hungary to participate in an anticorruption conference.

Alumnus delivers commencement address
Associate Headmaster and Dean of College Guidance Sam Moss ’63 reported that Darlington seniors plan to attend 60 different colleges. One hundred and eleven different public and private colleges and universities accepted students from Darlington’s class of 2002. “Fifty-one seniors, 49 percent of the class, distinguished themselves and brought honor to Darlington by the 85 academic, athletic, and special achievement scholarships that they have been offered – including one service academy appointment, ” Moss said. Monetary awards offered to this class have a total value of $2,523,224.
