Darlington School’s cross-country team has renamed two of the many cross-country trails on the School’s main campus in honor of two teachers. Cross-Country Assistant Coach Tom Sorci and the cross-country team announced the new names during this week’s Upper School Assembly.
The Main Cross-Country Trail has been renamed the Rob Davis Trail. Davis, who graduated from Darlington in 1985, ran cross-country at Darlington and has coached many teams to the state championship, including five consecutive state championships. Davis currently serves as head coach for the cross-country team
And, the access point to the trail behind the Middle School will be renamed the Ken Wempe Trail, in recognition of Wempe’s tireless devotion to the cross-country program as assistant coach, including the design, restoration, and upkeep of the trails. A top class runner in high school and at Kenyon College, Wempe completed his first marathon in South Carolina this fall.
Access to Darlington’s trails is made from several vantage points. Some walkers and runners start behind the McCain House, hence the name McCain Trail. The name of the trail honors a great Darlington teacher, and the School’s first principal, John Ross McCain. Another point of access is behind the Porter Building, hence the name Porter Trail, formerly known as the Cafeteria Trail. This trail is named in honor of Oliver William Porter, who graduated from Darlington in 1942, and his classmates who gave their lives in WWII.
