During Darlington’s spring sports assembly, students received the following recognition for their hard work, diligence, and dedication:
Track and Field
· John Maddox Memorial Trophy, for that boy and girl who have shown “outstanding spirit and performance in track and field”: Uri Seymour, senior, and Justin Albury, senior.
· Malcolm Lenwood Foster Jr. Trophy, for excellence in track and field: Reggie Gill, senior.
· James Enfield Berry Memorial Trophy, awarded to that boy who displayed outstanding spirit and leadership in track and field: Andrew Lawrence, senior.
· Team Spirit Award in Girls Track, presented to the team member who has contributed the most in spirit and loyalty: Megan Betts, sophomore.
· James Jeffrey Gaither Award, given by the 1997 boys and girls track team in honor of Coach Gaither and voted on by the track team to be given to the boy or girl track runner who best exemplifies the teachings of Coach Gaither, persistence and dedication: Kirby Cross, senior.
Golf
· Jack Barkell Award, for that golfer who has the lowest average score for the season and has shown outstanding ability: Patrick McShane, sophomore, and Jenny Morris, junior.
· Lanny Pinkard Memorial Trophy, presented in the memory of Larry Pinkard, a member of the 1987-89 Golf Team and Class of 1989, to the most improved golfer: Sanders Wallis, junior, Haley Tallent, sophomore.
Baseball
· Hustler Award for Baseball, to the player who gives 100 percent effort both in practice and contests: Danny DeAngelis, senior.
· Batting Championship Trophy, awarded by the coaches to the player with the highest batting average for the season: Ben Bevill, junior.
· Harry L. Boss Sr. Memorial Award, given by Harry Boss ’34 in memory of his father and presented to the best baseball player on the varsity squad: Ben Bevill, junior.
Boys Soccer
· James Carraway Soccer Award, given for outstanding sportsmanship on the soccer field by Dr. and Mrs. A. Carraway in memory of their son, James ’53: Max Hinton, junior.
· Doug Brown Award for Soccer, established by the late John R. Cunningham Jr. in memory of Douglas Brown Jr. ’65, and awarded to the member of the varsity soccer team voted most valuable by his teammates: Kevin Hughes, junior.
· John R. Cunningham Jr. Soccer Coaches Award, presented to the member of the soccer squad who has been of the greatest value to the coaches and the team. The award is made possible by members of the soccer squads who played under the guidance of John R. Cunningham Jr. in his 20 years of coaching: Jeffrey Connelly, senior.
· Philip M. Ham Spirit Award for Soccer, presented to the team member who has contributed the most in spirit and loyalty. Former students and players of Philip Ham in his honor and memory make the award possible: Rodney Murray, senior.
Tennis
· Alice Allgood Cooper Award for Tennis, awarded to the most valuable player in boys tennis: Nathan Starr, senior.
· Marion and Nelson Dobbs Award for Tennis, awarded to the player who displays the best effort throughout the tennis season: Griffin Duncan, senior.
· Most Valuable Player in Girls Tennis, sponsored by the Darlington Alumni Association and presented to the most valuable girl in tennis: Mary Becca Watson, sophomore.
· Spirit Award in Girls Tennis, presented to the team member who has contributed the most in spirit and loyalty: Hannah Betts, senior.
Girls Soccer
· Most Valuable Player in Girls Soccer, sponsored by the Darlington Alumni Association and presented to the most valuable girl in soccer: Rachel Wiggins, senior.
· Spirit Award in Girls Soccer, presented to the team member who has contributed the most team spirit and loyalty: Mimi Sumner, senior.
· Most Improved Player Girls Soccer Award, presented each year “to the player who, from the first day of practice to the season’s terminus, ahs shown the most improvement in her performance on the soccer field: Ann Elise Winn, senior.
· Most Valuable Player Defense, to the player who has been the most critical “cog” in preventing the other team from scoring: Lauren Wetherington, junior.
Boys Lacrosse
· Most Improved Lacrosse Player—Endowed by Mr. And Mrs. William Lee Thuston ’67, this award is given to that player who has shown the greatest improvement of his skills, leadership, and role in the team’s success over the course of the season. It recognizes the individual who through personal initiative, determination to better one’s self, and desire to better the team has made himself an example to be emulated for all who are part of the Darlington Lacrosse Program: Joey Franks, junior.
· Varsity Lacrosse Founders Award—Endowed by John S. Husser, the Founders Award is given in recognition of Coach Hyuk Kim, Norwood Teague, and the members of the first Darlington lacrosse team who contributed to found the sport at Darlington in 1991. Given to remember the tradition and honor of the game of lacrosse and that of the Darlington lacrosse program, this award is given to that player who best exemplifies the ideals of a sportsman; unselfish dedication, team before self, and unyielding effort, setting the standards for all Darlington lacrosse players: Hunter Edwards, junior.
· Most Valuable Lacrosse Player—Endowed by Gordon Lee Hight III ’94, this award recognizes that player, who through personal accomplishments, team leadership, and athletic excellence has made the greatest contribution to the team’s pursuit of victory. It is that player whose achievements and success are most clearly and indelibly linked with those of the team, who stands out as the most valuable player: Will Foss, junior.
Girls Lacrosse
· Most Valuable Girls Lacrosse Player—Alice Griffin, senior.
· Team Spirit Award Girls Lacrosse—Christina Elliott, senior.
