Shaw emphasizes integrity during Career Day

Darlington School held its annual career day Tuesday, Jan. 14. Many speakers, most of which are alumni, came from across the country to speak to the students. The school was especially excited to welcome a financial consultant from New Orleans and a NAVY JAG (Judge Advocate General) who works at the Pentagon and traveled from Washington, D.C. The freshman and sophomore program was conducted by Beth Walther Kempshall ’80 who is the associate deputy chief inspector in the office of professional responsibility for the DEA in D.C.

Julius Shaw ’72, executive vice president, Shaw Industries, gave the keynote address. “At Shaw Industries, we’re looking for employees with integrity, energy, and intelligence,” Shaw said. “And, of those three things, integrity is the most important.” Shaw shared that he loved his job and encouraged students to look for jobs that they enjoy rather than jobs that just make money.

Shaw attributed his success to Darlington. “I had been getting straight A’s at Cartersville High School, but I began slacking off,” he recalled. “My father enrolled me at Darlington and I can’t recall who cried harder on the trip down to school from Cartersville, my mother or me. I never worked so hard as I did that summer. I spent five hours a night and got straight C’s. But over time I learned to work smarter and gradually brought my grades up.”
