Future Alumni Spotlight: Kasey Barnett (’20)

Julia Thomas | April 28, 2020 | 733 views

Before the world shifted, the Advancement Office had planned to share senior spotlights on some of the faces of the Class of 2020 and what Darlington means to them. These students represent everything Darlington’s faculty and staff work tirelessly for - our future alumni.

There has never been a better time to feature our seniors - they deserve the spotlight as the spring they so looked forward to has shifted. This series will feature several Darlington seniors who will share their favorite things about Darlington and also how they are adjusting to this new world of distance learning.

We hope you will enjoy getting to know these seniors better and will make a gift to honor the Class of 2020, who need our support now more than ever. To make a gift to the 2019-2020 Darlington Fund please click here

Let’s get to know Kasey Barnett (’20), a day student from Cedartown, Georgia.

How have you met the challenge of distance learning?

Distance learning is a challenge because it's hard to cater to all of the different types of learning styles. I learn better with a physical learning environment, so it has been difficult to adjust. My teachers are doing everything they can to make the transition easier, so I think we have adapted pretty well.

What’s your favorite song?

"Even Though I'm Leaving" by Luke Combs or any Needtobreathe song

What’s your favorite thing served in the dining hall?

Mac n cheese or cookies

What house are you in and do you hold any leadership positions?

I am in Regester House. I am President of the Student Body and Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Darlingtonian.

What are you involved in at Darlington (clubs, etc.)?

I played school soccer and school basketball in 9th-11th grade. I joined the Soccer Academy for 12th. I'm in the Spanish Club. I'm also a student athletic trainer for football.

If you are in sports who is your favorite coach and why?

Choosing favorites is hard for me, but I think I would choose Coach Collier. He makes football practices enjoyable even in the heat, and he's so dedicated to all of the players. He knows when to make things fun for them but they also know when he's serious about something.

What is your favorite place on campus and why?

Mr. Allen and Mrs. Holst's offices because it's where I always spend my office hours. It's a really good place to relax and destress.

Who is your favorite teacher and why?

My favorite teacher would probably be Mr. McDurmon. History is my least favorite subject, but he still managed to make class interesting. His personality keeps you on your toes, but he knows how to take a joke and dish them out. Our lunch conversations are always the best.

Where do you want to go to college and what do you want to do?

I'm going to Belmont University in Nashville where I will major in Neuroscience.

If you could name the two new swans what would you name them?

Dwight & Angela, lol

The Darlington Fund raises $1 million every year. If you were given $10,000 what program would you want to give it to and why?

I would give it to the Counseling Department so that they can invest in a therapeutic service dog.

We have 1,500 donors who give to Darlington every year sure you have a great experience - in 10 words or less how would you thank them?

Thank you for giving us this opportunity.

What is your favorite thing about Darlington and why is that important to you?

The people. All of the teachers I have had really seem to care about the students. They don't just teach, they really try to connect with the students and make them feel comfortable. Darlington also gave me some friends that I will always be grateful for.
