Tiger Expert Senior Interview: Mary Grayson Spence

Emma Parham | March 3, 2014 | 478 views

Mary Grayson Spence is a senior day student who has attended Darlington School since sixth grade. She is head day prefect of Cooper House, a member of House Senate, co-captain of the Senior Band, and has managed the boys' lacrosse team for three seasons.

Q: How many years have you been at Darlington?
A: Seven. I came to Darlington in the sixth grade.

Q: What organizations are you involved in at school?
A: This year I am the Cooper House head day prefect, Senior Band co-captain, House Senate treasurer, and manager of the boys’ lacrosse team.

Q: What has been your favorite moment from this year?
A: My favorite moment was, by far, winning RUMPUS with Cooper House. For the longest time, the joke was that “all you have to do is beat Cooper” because Cooper House came in last for so many years. Last year, we tied for second and I’m so proud of all the day and dorm Cooper chicks that made winning possible this year. It’s sad that it was my last RUMPUS, but I’m just glad that we ended on a great one.

Q: How have you changed since freshman year?
A: Going to school here has opened my eyes to how large the world really is. Being so involved in the dorms in my high school years, being prefect of Cooper House, and just meeting new people has helped me by allowing me to learn about different cultures and areas of the world. Darlington has also helped me prepare for the world that lies ahead of me, not just college, but beyond.

Q: How have you stayed the same since freshman year?
A: I’m still a goof ball! I’m always trying to come up with fun phrases that people might catch on to like “salty crickets” and “nuggetz.” Being goofy and fun is a part of me and I will always be this way.

Q: What advice would you give to underclassmen?
A: Get involved! You won't remember the days you sat on your couch eating cheese balls; you’ll remember RUMPUS, Tigerfest, and the people you meet along the way. Freshman year, I didn’t think I would be a lacrosse manager or head prefect, but I really love it! I have met so many new people by just trying something new and I’ve found new interests.

Q: What do you want the readers to know about you?
A: I love boneless wings, Cooper House, and ‘Merica, and I’m a Dr. Phil enthusiast.
