A Life Lesson: ‘Some Stinky, Some Starchy ... One Holy’

Tomorrow morning at 8:15 a.m., Darlington’s kindergarten and pre-first class will present an original Christmas play titled “Some Stinky, Some Starchy ... One Holy.”

The students have embraced the idea of becoming stars! They love to sing and have memorized their lines. They stand tall and speak clearly. Each must listen carefully to know when it is his or her turn to speak. We have learned to cooperate!  We must work together to convey one message.

All of those things are important, but the play teaches much more. The “Stinky” are the Shepherds… probably not their first career choice. They sleep outside with sheep. They smell baaaaaadly!  The “Starchy” are the Wise Men. They hold respected positions. They are educated and wear nicer, starched and clean clothes. These men’s lives are totally different, and yet, they all seek the “One Holy” King.

As I wrote this play, I wanted the children to understand that people are different. Our careers, our family lives, our houses, our clothes and our socioeconomic levels may be worlds apart. But in our hearts we all seek the same things.

I hope the children remember from this simple, fun performance that every person deserves respect. You never look up to someone because he or she has more and you never look down on someone because he or she has less. All people have potential and promise. And all seek to find the One who holds the Hope of the World.

Merry Christmas from the Cox Cubs!
