Effective 2008-09, Dr. Mark Carleton will assume the role of associate headmaster and academic dean in order to fully concentrate on maintaining congruency between the school’s mission statement and all academic activities, announced Headmaster Tom Whitworth today.

“Many of you will remember that Darlington School achieved dual accreditation last year through SAIS-SACS. We are still celebrating that achievement, paying close attention to recommendations made by the accreditation team in our final evaluation report,” said Whitworth in a letter to parents. “One of those recommendations has influenced us to reevaluate our current structural organization to better align it with the mission of our school.”

As academic leader, Carleton will develop curriculum in grades pre-K to 12; oversee all academic advising and counseling programs; monitor student academic progress; coordinate efforts of department heads and committees; observe, supervise and evaluate faculty members in the development and implementation of curriculum; manage the hiring process PK-12; and stand in for Whitworth when he is out of town.

“Without adding additional layers of administration to the Upper School, we will elevate the status of the current dean of students’ office to that of director of Upper School,” said Whitworth, “and immediately begin a nationwide search for the person to fill this position. We have also invited interested internal candidates to apply.”

The director’s position will focus on the culture and vision for the Upper School community, and he or she will be primarily responsible for communicating this vision to all internal and external constituencies in order to help students mature and become responsible and productive members of the community. He or she will also oversee the honor, wellness, counseling and discipline systems and will serve as a resource for students, faculty and parents. The director of Upper School will serve on Darlington’s PK-12 Leadership Team and will report to the headmaster.

A Search Committee has already been formed to evaluate candidates for the director of Upper School position. Click here to read the complete job description.

“We will keep the Darlington community apprised of our progress, and as always, we thank you for your support of this great institution,” said Whitworth. “We are fully invested in your children and in making this place the best possible learning environment for each and every student.”
