Kindergarten Teacher

10-month full-time, teaching, starts August 1, 2027

Darlington School seeks a Kindergarten Teacher to join a new co-teaching team in its expanded Kindergarten program, beginning with the 2027-28 school year. A Darlington teacher fully supports the mission and values of the school and has primary responsibility for creating the best possible student experience in support of the school’s learning framework, The Cycle of Learning. The candidate should value the craft of teaching as much as the skills and content being learned, and will join a dynamic community of teaching professionals who are continuously growing and collaborating. Teachers work with grade-level and enrichment teachers and the administrative team to provide a program that nurtures every child’s success.

Our Kindergarten Team and the Co-Teaching Model
Kindergarten is growing into an enlarged learning space with 30 students. The program will now have two full-time Kindergarten teachers and an aide. The two teachers plan together, teach together, and are jointly responsible for every child in the room. Instruction is flexible, moving as the children need among whole group, split classes, small groups, and centers. Three things define how the team works:

  • Plan together. Lessons, assessments and routines are designed jointly, with regular common planning time.
  • Share ownership. All 30 children are “our students,” and families hear one consistent voice from the team.
  • Work as a three-person team. The two teachers and the aide are partners, and the aide is part of the instructional team.

Co-teaching at this scale is new to our Kindergarten, and the team will build the model together. The day is not scripted, so this is a good fit for an innovative educator who enjoys shaping how a classroom works and sees a shared classroom as a chance to teach better than they could alone.

Literacy and Math Programs
Kindergarten teachers deliver two structured, research-based programs. Both have a learning curve for teachers new to them, and Darlington will provide any training needed.

  • Literacy: Fundations. Wilson Language Training’s structured literacy program, grounded in the Orton-Gillingham approach.
  • Math: Math in Focus. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt’s program based on Singapore Math, which builds deep conceptual understanding through concrete, pictorial, and abstract representations.

Caring for the Whole Child and the Whole Day
Kindergarten teachers at Darlington are responsible for far more than academics, and the team shares in the daily life of the school:

  • Social-emotional development. Teaching and modeling routines, friendship skills, self-regulation, and kindness, and partnering with your co-teacher and aide to notice and support each child.
  • Supervision. Lunch, play times, morning drop-off and afternoon pick-up (carline).
  • Enrichment coordination. Working with the Spanish, art, P.E., and music teachers to move students between classes and, at times, to coordinate lessons.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in an area relevant to early childhood education; master’s degree preferred
  • Relevant classroom teaching experience
  • Orton-Gillingham or comparable multisensory reading training, or the ability to receive it
  • A genuine passion for teaching young children and working with all types of learners
  • A collaborative approach to teaching and a willingness to contribute to the academic and extracurricular life of the school

Expectations
The clearest statement of what we expect of a Darlington teacher is our Academic Standards. In brief:

  • Course Design. Designs backward from a skills-based curriculum map, together with a co-teacher, using a range of assessments and the Darlington model of Discovery, Application, and Reflection.
  • Course Build. Builds consistent, developmentally appropriate routines that foster independence, confidence, and flexible pacing and promote safety and wellness, shared consistently across both teachers.
  • Teaching. Builds an authentic relationship with each student, teaches with a growth mindset and high expectations, meets the needs of individual learners, and communicates effectively and uses technology proficiently.

Core Responsibilities

  • Plans, teaches, and assesses in partnership with the Kindergarten co-teacher and aide
  • Prepares age-appropriate, differentiated lessons in all content areas, embracing STEM and learning through exploration, and creates and directs grade-level play
  • Evaluates students’ academic and social growth, keeps records, and prepares progress reports with the co-teacher
  • Engages parents in the education of their children and maintains appropriate relationships with staff and community members
  • Creates an organized, inviting shared classroom that supports independence, collaboration, choice, and flexible seating
  • Integrates technology through the SmartBoard and 1:1 iPad program, and aligns scope and sequence with vertical teams

About Rome

Darlington's picturesque location among the seven hills and three rivers of Rome, Ga., has provided a beautiful setting to live, learn, work and play since the town was founded and subsequently named at Darlington's Home-on-the-Hill in 1834. A central location between three major southern cities — Atlanta, Birmingham, Ala. and Chattanooga, Tenn. — permits the city to be a convenient hop, skip and jump away from anywhere within the region, including three international airports.

Just minutes from the Darlington campus is a beautifully-preserved Victorian district in Historic Downtown Rome. The riverside downtown area features locally-owned restaurants, boutique shops, hotels, trails, historic homes, renovated lofts and a vibrant nightlife. Throughout the year, Rome and Floyd County play host to annual festivals, parades, community theater productions, music events, sports championship games and much more.

Floyd County is the home to a population of over 101,558. The area boasts strong industrial and healthcare sectors, and is a cultural hub for Northwest Georgia. Floyd County is the location of several higher education institutions, including Berry College, Georgia Highlands College, Georgia Northwestern Technical College and Shorter University.

Unrivaled southern hospitality, a strong sense of community, and a real understanding of why our Cherokee forebears called this area the “Enchanted Land” await you in Georgia’s Rome.
