Zimmer named Learning Center director

Libbie Zimmer has spent 2005-06 researching and planning for a Learning Center, which will open its doors in August. Under her leadership and guidance, the School has developed a comprehensive plan for supporting learning differences. Zimmer will become director of the Learning Center, effective Aug. 1.
“After conducting a national search for a director, I am convinced that Libbie Zimmer is the perfect fit to lead this very exciting initiative at Darlington School,” said Headmaster Tom Whitworth. “Her gift in working with and embracing those around her coupled with her total passion and commitment to the well-being of all students makes her an obvious choice for this role. I am thrilled that our Learning Center will be steered by Libbie’s vision.”
As director, Zimmer will report to the headmaster, work closely with the academic dean and director of admission, and supervise all Learning Center specialists at the Lower, Middle and Upper divisions.
“It has been amazing to watch the momentum for the Learning Center building in the Darlington community. Most people have been very supportive because they know the outcome will be positive for all of our students,” said Zimmer. “I feel so very fortunate to be involved in creating a viable program that will give students, parents and teachers access to more educational resources that will help our community grow in and out of the classroom.”
Zimmer has been on staff at Darlington for nine years, and has broad experience in working with the students in residence halls, on the Discipline Committee and in day-to-day student life. She also taught for nine years in public schools prior to her time at Darlington. She holds a Bachelor of Science from Meredith College (N.C.) and a Master of Education from Virginia Commonwealth University. She and her husband Casey, director of admission for Darlington, live on campus and have two children, Ellie and William.
Darlington School is currently seeking Learning Center specialists at the Lower, Middle and Upper School levels.
“My first and foremost goal is to hire a quality team of professionals who have experience as classroom teachers and have experience teaching students who have learning differences (ADD/ADHD or LD),” said Zimmer. “This team needs to have an understanding and passion for all styles of learning; the ability to communicate effectively with students, parents and teachers; and a desire to be lifelong learners.”
