You Don't Have to Travel to Have a Meaningful Summer Experience

Volunteer in your community. There are agencies everywhere that would welcome student help! Find one that suits your interests and abilities. Some of the hours may count toward your servant leadership requirement at Darlington. Ask Mrs. Barnes for details.

Work. Little else can teach responsibility or offer personal satisfaction like a job.

Spend time with elderly family and  friends. What a great way to have history come to life!

Visit local points of interest. Learn about the history and culture of your own hometown.

Try something new! Take up painting, hiking, camping or anything that piques your  interest.

Colleges do not care what type of activity a student does over the summer. One program is not better than another; a person who can pay for lavish trips abroad is not favored over another person who has a summer job. It’s not the experience itself that matters, but rather what you get out of the experience that counts.
