Wrestlers Take Down Last Four Teams for Winning Season

The wrestling team at 5-6 needed strong performances the last week before the area tournament to earn a winning season. Those last two nights of competition proved to be worthwhile, yielding the Tigers four consecutive victories and a 9-6 season record.
On Thursday, Jan. 27, the Tigers conquered the hosting team, Bowdon, 42-30. Then they turned their attention toward Temple, which they defeated 53-27.
On Tuesday, Feb. 1, the Tigers closed out their pre-state tournament season with a tri-meet at home against Trion and Model. The Tigers easily bested an undermanned Model team 58-6, but the most excitement of the night came in a re-match with Trion.
Although the Tigers had defeated Trion in their previous outing, Darlington took the mat with a significant handicap: starters Peter Hicks and Michael Meadows were out of the lineup. Jason Eberhard, Young Choi, Brian Harrison, and Matt Johnson scored crucial wins up through the 145 lb. weight class.
With Stu Minshew guaranteed a forfeit and 6 team points at 275, Trion could avenge its previous loss by sweeping all the remaining matches. In the 171 lb. weight class, senior Chris Draudt battled a Bulldog team captain, eventually losing, but denying Trion the crucial 6 point fall. After Draudt cracked the door open to a Tiger victory, Adam Seiz came crashing through in stunning fashion to pin an opponent he had previously been unable to defeat, thus allowing the Tigers to hang onto victory by a 36-35 margin and close out the season with four straight victories.
Three Darlington wrestlers qualified for the state tournament by placing in the area tournament Feb. 5 at Lovett: Eberhard , fourth at 103; Seiz, second at 189; and Minshew, second at 275. The following weekend during the state tournament at Riverside Military Academy, Adam Seiz finished fifth in the state.
Heavy-weight wrestler Stewart Minshew wrapped up his Darlington career with some impressive personal records.
“Stuart Minshew is arguably the most productive heavyweight wrestler in Darlington history,” said Head Coach Steve Killian.
For example, Killian reported, with a career record of 77-56, Minshew has the fourth highest total number of lifetime victories in Darlington’s record book, and his 432 team points ranks him fourth for total scoring in a career. In four years of competition, Minshew racked up 45 pins, tying him with state champion Derrille Greene ’95 for the third highest in Darlington history.
