Wilson ('46) to present master teacher lecture during Alumni Weekend

Dr. Frank C. Wilson (’46), Kenan professor of orthopaedics at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, will present a master teacher lecture on "Literature and Life: The Leaven of Letters" Saturday, Sept. 28, at 11 a.m. in the McCallie-Kennedy Library as part of Darlington's Alumni Weekend festivities. All are invited to attend and admission is free.

"We are so excited to welcome Dr. Wilson back to campus to give this lecture," said Vicki Vincent, director of alumni relations. "Not only does he have a very distinguished career in the medical field, he is the 1997 Darlington Distinguished Alumnus and has served as a guest lecturer and visiting professor at some of the top colleges and universities around the country. I know that the Darlington Community will enjoy talking with and learning from him."

Dr. Wilson graduated Magna Cum Laude from Darlington in 1946 and went on to earn his B.A. at Vanderbilt University and M.D. from the Medical College of Georgia. Certified by the American Board of Orhtopaedic Surgery, Dr. Wilson conducted his Residency and Fellowship at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center before going on to become a leading expert in orthopaedic surgery. His clinical interests are joint replacement and disorders of the shoulder and ankle, and his research interests include knee replacement, ankle injuries, surgical infections and medical education.

 

Dr. Wilson began his career in 1963 as an instructor in orthopaedics at Columbia University’s College of Physicians & Surgeons in New York. The following year, he became an instructor in surgery (orthopaedics) at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, a position he held until he was named assistant professor of surgery in 1965. In 1967, he was named chief of the UNC School of Medicine’s Division of Orthopaedics, a role he held until 1995. In 1968, Dr. Wilson became associate professor of surgery and, in 1971, professor of surgery. Since 1980, he has served as an instructor in the University of North Carolina’s Undergraduate Honors Program. In 1990, he served as acting assistant dean of graduate medical education and, in 1992, he was named Kenan Professor of Orthopaedics.

 

Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Wilson has earned numerous honors and awards. He has been a Markle Scholar in Academic Medicine; a Norma Berryhill Distinguished Lecturer at the UNC School of Medicine; a finalist for the UNC Board of Governors Teaching Award; and former president of the Association of Orthopaedic Chairmen, the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, the American Orthopaedic Association and The Thomas Wolfe Society.

 

Dr. Wilson has also received the ABC Traveling Fellowship from the American Orthopaedic Association, the Nicholas Andry Award for Orthopaedic Resarch, the University of North Carolina’s Kenan Professorship and Thomas Jefferson Award, Kenan Study Leave, the UNC School of Medicine’s Distinguished Faculty Award, Darlington School’s 1997 Distinguished Alumnus Award, a Certificate of Appreciation for Distinguished Service from the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education, the North Carolina Orthopaedic Association’s Distinguished Orthoapedist Award, the Southern Orthopaedic Association’s Distinguished Southern Orthopaedist Award and the American Orthopaedic Association’s Clinician-Educator Award.
