The Library Services Department was busy this summer getting the Joanne G. Yancey ELA-8 Library at Thatcher Hall ready for our students. Not only did we move the Lower School collection to its new location, we also rearranged the Yancey Library to accommodate different age levels, hired a new part-time librarian, and created a DAR Reads page.

We began our summer projects a little early knowing that moving a large collection would take a great deal of time. In April, we hired book movers to move the Lower School collection to the Yancey Library. Mrs. Overberg, several student volunteers and I spent the summer unpacking, appropriating and shelving the books into their individual sections.  We also created a special “enchanted garden” area for the ELA-2 students to meet during their weekly library visits. This area not only includes picture books, easy reader books, and some chapter books appropriate for this age, it also has new seating, a garden rug (arriving soon) and garden-themed pillows and stuffed animals.

In July, Mrs. Susan Foster, a librarian from the Marietta Center for Advanced Academics, joined our team. Susan has over 15 years of experience working with children both as a librarian and as a preschool teacher. She will work primarily with ELA-2 students on Wednesdays, Fridays and alternating Thursdays. We are happy to have Susan on our team.

And finally, we are most excited about our transformed library web page. Not only will you find resources that were previously on this page, like our library catalogs and databases, but now you will also find a tab entitled DAR Reads when you are logged into the site. This tab has been created specifically for ELA-8 parents, faculty and students, and will include helpful reading information and most importantly, a listing of the books that your student currently has checked out.

We hope you will visit this new page often and learn about all that is happening in the ELA-8 Library!
