What Does RUMPUS Mean to the Darlington Community?

You have heard the word, read the emails, seen the announcements, witnessed the excitement, and watched the preparations... but I want to take a minute to express what RUMPUS means to our community.

R is for retention. For many in the Darlington Community, this is the most-anticipated event of the school year. For our new mid-year students, it is an introduction to our Darlington family. And for some, it is a turning point as to whether they return for the next academic year.

U is for unequivocal fun! It's free and entertaining and surprising! Enough said.

M is for motivation. Prefects are motivated to create the greatest weekend of the year. We see emerging leaders and students, who otherwise may not get involved, motivated to engage in the spirit of competition. Students are motivated to be creative and step out of their comfort zones.

P is for participation. Students cheer, dance, eat, cook, draw, run, think, problem solve, high five, and much more throughout the weekend. They are engaged and involved in the name of the sisterhoods and brotherhoods of Neville, Regester, Thornwood, Summerbell, Cooper and Moser Houses.

U is for unity. RUMPUS is an opportunity for students, alumni and faculty to come together, compete, laugh, be challenged and simply be human. Friendships are formed and barriers are broken down as we unite in the spirit of RUMPUS.

S is for student success, satisfaction and salaries. At Darlington, things like RUMPUS, the International Fair and residential life provide an education outside the classroom that can lead to a student satisfaction. A happy student is a thriving student and, often, a successful student. Satisfied and successful students stay at Darlington, which means that we adults get to come to work in our classrooms and offices and earn our salaries.

So you see, RUMPUS is important to what we are trying to instill in our students and accomplish in our mission of Darlington. Please come and support our students and your colleagues as we continue to create legacies that will last forever. I look forward to seeing all of you this weekend!

NOW, LET'S GET READY TO RUMPUS!!!!!!!!!
