Web Class Creates On-Line Archives; Librarian Seeks Items for Archives Room

Students in Director of Publications Stefan Eady’s web authoring class have created on-line archives pages for Darlington’s web site (click “Hanks On-Line Archives” from the home page at www.darlington.rome.ga.us).
As part of a class project, senior Ob Dheeravongkit, junior Raul Gonzalez, and senior Wyatt Sweat constructed the framework for a series of web pages depicting the history of Darlington in photos and text. Working with Head Librarian Charlotte Patton, the students compiled information on John Paul Cooper, Darlington’s founder; J.J. Darlington, the school’s namesake; the original school building on East Ninth Street; the first school library; and many other topics relating to Darlington’s early years.
Patton is excited about the project because the web pages allow a large audience to view often inaccessible archives, and because “I can easily change the text and pictures for different historical focuses.”
Preserving Darlington’s past often means searching for missing links. Currently Patton is seeking several items for archival purposes: an old ROTC uniform, a Proctor debate medal, and a football letter jacket from the school’s earliest teams.
“At President Jim McCallie’s suggestion we are planning a school history wall somewhere on campus in the future, possibly in the new student athletic and recreation center, since the facility will be very visible to so many people,” Patton said.
