There is an African proverb that says, “Smooth seas do not good sailors make.” I can think of no better way to describe our experience after kicking off Darlington’s historic Second Century Campaign publicly in 2008.

The economic downfall in the fall of ’08 made for some choppy and rough-at-times seas as we sought to achieve our $90 million goal. Yet our team of campaign volunteers kept a strong hand on the rudder, faced the stiff winds head on, and plowed forward to this exciting victory. Their commitment has been staggering and inspiring.

Since 2008, we have logged thousands of miles; met with hundreds of alumni, parents and friends; and held events throughout the country. We sought the help of the Darlington family near and far – and they answered the call in record numbers. Contributors to the campaign numbered 4,962, representing 49 states and 30 countries. Additionally, 156 volunteers – including 100 members of the Campaign Cabinet – represented 12 different states.

All of this was the result of a love for this wonderful place we call Darlington and a desire to meet the needs of the students and faculty here.

I can honestly say that despite all the challenges we faced on our road to victory, we are better sailors today and very much encouraged by the support we have experienced. So, we sail on … for Darlington.
