Virginia student wins McCain Scholarship to Darlington

A current eighth grader from Staunton, Va., William McKay Gilliland Jr., has been awarded the J. Ross McCain Honor Scholarship to come to Darlington next fall as a freshman resident student. Head of House Reba Barnes is excited about having Gilliland join Barnes House. “Mac is a well-rounded student who will make a great addition to our House,” Barnes said.
Gilliland’s uncle, John Gilliland, who graduated from Darlington in 1978, nominated him for the McCain Scholarship. Gilliland’s father, William McKay Gilliland, also graduated from Darlington in 1976.
While Gilliland says that academics come first with him, he likes soccer and basketball. He is also a Life Scout working on his Eagle badge. Gilliland plays two musical instrument, double bass and guitar, and participates in youth group activities in his church. He enjoys doing volunteer work as well.
Since 1983, Darlington has awarded a full scholarship to an incoming resident student from the southeastern United States in honor of J. Ross McCain, Darlington's first headmaster. This scholarship, funded by an anonymous foundation, is renewable each year and is awarded solely on the basis of merit, without regard to financial need, race, or gender. The McCain Scholarship competition seeks candidates who are of Christian background and have displayed enlightened leadership in school and community, outstanding academic achievements, and initiative in all aspects of their lives.
