Village Offers Immersion Experience

Foreign language students are capable of having an immersion experience without leaving the country. Middle and Upper School parents and students are invited to an informational meeting about this opportunity offered by the Concordia College Language Villages, Monday, Jan. 15, in the Briley Lecture Room at 7 p.m. Darlington language faculty Barbara Barfield, Chris Bettera, and Randa Mixon will present information regarding sessions offered in 12 languages –all occurring at language camps in Bemidji, Minn.
“Each language has a camp with buildings that are indigenous to the architecture of the country. Counselors are native speakers and Americans who are fluent. The reason for the Americans is so that they understand the kids. It gives kids a chance to have an immersion experience in the States without going abroad,” Mixon, Darlington foreign language department chair, said. “Sometimes parents are worried about sending them to a foreign country. It is also a camp experience with typical camp activities and students can opt to receive academic credit if they follow the full six-week program.” Bettera has worked there for three summers. Barfield and Mixon have attended two-week summer faculty workshops at Concordia College.
