Varsity Scholar Bowl team two-time Northwest Georgia winner

Quick. You have five seconds. Answer this: “What idiom about dihydrogen oxide means that an argument is not tenable?” Maybe you can answer this: “Xanthippe, Socrates’ wife, is described as being what kind of small, insectivorous mammal?” Surely you can answer this: “Insert six arithmetic means between 15 and –16.5.” For that last one you can take a whole 30 seconds to answer.
The two-time winners of the Northwest Georgia RESA High School Academic Bowl, Darlington’s Scholar Bowl team, can answer these and much harder questions. In fact, in the last two years, the varsity team has only lost one match by one question to Rome High School and the JV team was undefeated this year until the playoffs. Faculty advisers for both teams are Craig Schmidt, history department chair, and George Aswumb, AP Humanities and Cinema instructor.
The pressure is intense. A round starts with a toss-up question worth 10 points. Teams have 5 seconds to answer (30 seconds in math competition). The winning team then has 30 seconds (60 seconds in math competition) answer a bonus question worth 20 points. There are 70 questions in each round and 140 questions total. That’s requires a lot of brainpower.
The following students are members of the School’s varsity team: team leaders Payton Bradford and Drew Parker and other members Nasir Fakhri, Ana Glass, Leslie Goldbert, Allison Harbin, Jonathan Lane, Paul Maxwell, Zach Norman, and Wiley Sharp. They have racked up an impressive record this year, with the following wins: Model (560-180), Armuchee (390-310), Pepperell (430-100), Rome (630-390), Model (470-240), Armuchee (600-210), and Pepperell (420-320). They took second place in the Region III Northwest Georgia RESA Varsity High School Academic Bowl, stormed the playoffs beating Bremen, Gordon Central, and Cartersville, and earning first place for the second year in a row in the Northwest Georgia RESA High School Academic Bowl.
The junior varsity team is strong as well boding well for the teams’ future success. JV members are: team leaders, Peter Hjort, Jacob Malone, and Trey Robinson and members Adam Al-Sayed, Allen Casey, Brett Henson, and Michael Rebman. They stomped all competition locally, with the following wins: Model (720-160), Armuchee (710-360), Pepperell (900-240), Rome (660-650), Model (730-330), Armuchee (750-290), Pepperell (880-270), and Rome (720-510). They took first place in the Region III Northwest Georgia RESA JV High School Academic Bowl, making it to the playoffs where they lost to Haralson County.
RESA is the acronym for the Regional Education Service Agency. The Northwest Georgia RESA, located in Rome, Ga., is one of 16 regional educational service agencies located in service districts throughout the State of Georgia. The agencies were established for the purpose of sharing services designed to improve the effectiveness of the educational programs of member school systems.
