The varsity boys and girls cross country teams opened their season Saturday at the Pickens Preview in Jasper, Georgia. In an event that featured mostly Class AAAAA and Class AAAAAA schools, Darlington was the only Class A team. The boys were able to claim a trophy with a terrific 2nd place finish. The girls placed 6th of the 18 schools, but were only 22 points out of first in a very tightly contested race.
Leading the way for the Tigers was junior Andrew Hudson, who finished 13th with a time of 17:58. He was followed closely by freshman Jared Deaton (14th, 18:03) and sophomore Spencer Fields (15th, 18:08). The top-5 scoring was completed by Avery Cypress and Chris Edwards finishing almost simultaneously (32nd and 33rd, both 18:50). Also running in the varsity race were Alex Cox (40th, 19:01), and Wes Andrews (93rd, 20:37).
The top male JV runner for the Tigers was junior Coulter Schrum (28th, 20:26), competing in his first cross country race. Senior Du Zhang was named Darlington's male runner of the week for his personal record (PR) of 22:27 in the JV race. Also running PRs for the boys were Schrum, Andrews, Parker Robinson, Drew Finley, and Lyons Nida.
The girls' varsity team was led by sophomore Kinslee Clevenger, finishing 7th with a time of 21:07. Fellow sophomore Lauren Hooper was immediately behind in 8th place with a 21:09.
