The boys' and girls' varsity cross country teams traveled to Marist School in Atlanta on Saturday to compete on one of the most difficult courses in the State. In a field of about 20 elite 4A, 5A, and 6A schools the boys placed 7th and the girls placed 9th, finishing as the first Class A school. The Marist "Double Dip" is named for the large hills the runners must face. In addition to the hills, the course featured many obstacles including hurdling hay bails.
The varsity boys were led by sophomore Andrew Hudson, who completed the 5K course in 18:12 and in 32nd place. The boys' top-5 had an amazing 1-5 gap of only 29 seconds: Spencer Fields with an 18:22 (36th), Avery Cypress with an 18:28 (42), Alex Cox with an 18:39 (50th) and Jared Deaton with an 18:41 (53rd). The varsity top-7 was rounded out by Chris Edwards (19:10) and Coulter Schrum (19:50). Schrum was the only Darlington boy competing in the varsity race to run a PR, knocking 7 seconds of his previous best. Cox was named the boys' runner of the meet for his performance, which was 22 seconds faster than his best this season.
The girls were led by sophomore Lauren Hooper (21:38, 21st). Kinslee Clevenger (29th, 21:47), Anna Cantrell (22:57, 47th), Bethany Cagle (23:10, 55th), and Abby Cantrell (23:19, 62nd) completed the top-5. Abby was named the girls' runner of the meet for her PR time and for her contribution towards closing the girls' 1-5 gap to 1:41. The girls top-7 was rounded out by Callee Manna and Megan Healy.
The boys' JV squad was led by junior Trammell Braden, who ran his fastest time of 2012, a 19:57. JV boys running PR's included Parker Robinson (21:31), Drew Finley (23:22), Carlos Carrillo (23:42), and Joe Fang (25:59).
The girls' JV team was led by sophomore Juliann Baker with a time of 24:42. The only JV girl to run a PR on the difficult course was Jessica Mauer, who ran a 28:51.
The top 10 boys and girls will travel this Friday and Saturday to Macon, which is the new site of the Class A State meet. They will preview the course they will run again on November 3 for the State Championship.
