Darlington varsity boys basketball is blazing to a great start, in a season marked by Coach Jim Van Es’s 500th career win and great play by Blake Rolan, Chris Presley, Will Thuston, and Ryan Fox.
Rolan scored 24 points, Presley 20, and Thuston 10 as Darlington beat Chattooga 73-50 Saturday, Dec. 18, in the first round of the Rome News-Tribune Holiday Festival to bring the team’s season-beginning win streak to four and Van Es’s career winning total to 499. But the second round did not fare so well, as Darlington lost to Pepperell 56-50 Tuesday, Dec. 21, in a closely played game. Rolan scored 20 points in the victory, Presley following with 17.
The first round of the Unilever Holiday Hoopfest Monday, Dec. 27, also did not go well, as the Tigers lost by 41 points to Riverdale, Tenn. But Van Es was not to wait long for his 500th career win.
Van Es’s milestone victory came in the second round of the Unilever tournament Tuesday, Dec. 28, as Darlington defeated Armuchee 66-35 in a well-executed game for the Tigers. Rolan led the scoring with 23, and Fox and Thuston followed with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
“All this really means,” Van Es told the Rome News-Tribune of his 500th victory in a characteristically modest way, “is that I have been very fortunate to sit on the end of the bench with an awful lot of good kids. They are the ones that have done all the winning, not me.”
The team beat Armuchee 58-55 Dec. 30, to lift its record to 6-3. Fox led the Tigers with 20 points and Rolan had 18.
Darlington began the new year with a Tuesday, Jan. 4, loss to Calhoun 65-48, followed by a close 60-57 loss to Model Friday, Jan. 7, in a game which ended with a chance to tie the game with 10 seconds remaining. In that game, the Tigers were led by Presley with 13 points, with Thuston following with 12.
The Tigers got back to winning ways with a 73-46 win over Adairsville Jan. 11, with Rolan scoring 29 and Presley 18 points.
Armuchee fell to Darlington 73-50 in a Jan. 14, game that was closer than the score. Presley led the game’s scoring with 27 points; Rolan scored 13 points.
Darlington was victorious over Mt. Paran 80-60 Saturday, Jan. 15. Rolan led the game’s scoring with 27 points, with Presley scoring 16 and Fox 14.
The Tigers lifted their record to 11-5 on the season, 4-2 in Region 6-A North, with a 64-56 over-time win over Galloway Tuesday, Jan. 18. After the game deadlocked at 55-55 at the end of regulation, the Tigers outscored Galloway 11-3 in the overtime period to take the victory. Fox made five 3-pointers to lead Darlington’s scoring with 27 points. Rolan followed with 17.
