Upper School casts random drug testing vote

Upper School students and faculty were given the opportunity to vote on a new substance abuse policy, Thursday, Nov. 29. The idea was discussed on Monday, Oct. 29 during assembly, House meetings on November 5, and advisee meetings on November 9. The proposal to adopt random drug testing failed to meet the two-thirds majority needed to pass.
The substance abuse policy was proposed as a part of the School’s commitment to provide a safe and productive learning and living environment for students. The policy introduces registration testing, reasonable suspicion testing, and random testing for drugs and alcohol. “Our commitment to preventing drug and alcohol abuse in our community reflects our firm belief that by supporting a policy on substance abuse, we are helping individuals lead healthy, happy, well-ordered lives,” David Hicks, Darlington president, wrote in the policy statement. “The ultimate goal of this substance abuse policy is to balance respect for the privacy of our students with the need to provide a safe, productive, educational environment.”
