Upper School Briefs

Twelve seniors at the top of the class of 2000 were inducted into the Darlington chapter of the Cum Laude Society – the secondary school equivalent of Phi Beta Kappa, on Wednesday, Jan. 26. In order to be considered for induction, a student must have maintained an A average for all four years and must have taken at least two honors and/or Advanced Placement courses each year or eight over four years. Since membership is limited to between 10 and 20 percent of each senior class, not everyone who has those credentials can necessarily be admitted. According to Dean of Studies Sam Moss, chapter president, the following seniors were inducted: Alexis Adams, Ken Edwards, Luke Farmer, Ana Monroe Fitzner, Kelli Gavant, Raul Gonzalez, Rob Lanier, Connie Lee, Two Minesuk, Adam Richardson, Maury Stegall, and Katie Van Es.
Language instructors Tracy Rucker and Virginie Morel are leading a group of 12 students on a tour of Toledo, Madrid, and Paris over spring break, March 3-11.
The Upper School’s newly formed math team, under the guidance of math instructor Pat Waddell, was listed as one of the highest scoring teams in the state soon after beginning competition in the Georgia Math League contests. There are 15 team members (nominated by faculty members), but other math students may take the Georgia Math League test. Each month, the five highest scores are sent to the Georgia contest, where they are in competition with scores from approximately 70 other schools in the state. Math team members also compete in other contests often sponsored by colleges or universities. Members Raul Gonzalez (who had one of the highest individual contest scores in the state), Ken Edwards, Young Jae Lee, and Adam Richardson attended the Southeastern Math Contest held at the University of Alabama in October. Others on the math team include Luke Farmer, Katie Gerhard, William Krueger, Two Minesuk, Joanna Mundy, Clara Smith, George Barron, Sarah Rhodes, Crystal Waninger, and Jordano Williams. “I am so grateful for the enthusiasm and support this team is receiving,” Waddell said. “We appreciate the efforts of parents Blanca Gonzalez and Carol Edwards, who have given many hours of their time to help these young people.”
