Two receive Teresa Huffman Watters Award

Fourth-grader Anna Claire Atha and fifth-grader Luke Johnson received the Teresa Huffman Watters ('72T) Award May 26 during the Lower School’s annual Moving-Up Ceremony.
“We decided to give two awards this year because the addition of fifth grade at the Middle School means that both of these classes will be moving up next year,” said Steve Bartholomew, director of Lower School. “Both of our recipients have attended Darlington since pre-kindergarten. Anna Claire is an outstanding writer and a best friend to everyone. Luke is a compassionate, caring student who demonstrates outstanding sportsmanship both on and off the field. These students were selected by the faculty because they exemplify excellent work ethic and show responsibility each and every day to themselves and others.”
Watters’ parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Huffman (’40), chose to honor her 23 years of service to the Lower School by endowing an award in her name. The award is presented each year at the Moving-Up Ceremony to a student who has exhibited the following characteristics:
Growth in character which distinguishes him or her from others;
Growth in developing self-discipline by being responsible in all areas;
Growth in the desire for learning by working beyond expectations;
Growth in morals by discerning right from wrong;
Growth in friendships by being considerate of all, regardless of their differences;
Growth in becoming a solid person and student who should be proud of him or herself.
Anna Claire is the daughter of Cathe and Tommy Atha of Rome. Luke is the son of Sally and Larry Johnson of Rome.
