Two nominated for Outstanding Student Athlete Award competition

Seniors Jaclyn Brass and Chase Butler have been selected to represent Darlington in the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority's John Pinson Outstanding Student Athlete Award competition.
"Jaclyn and Chase are outstanding student-athletes, but more than that, they are outstanding students and role models," said Athletic Director Bob Stinchcomb. "We are so proud of their individual accomplishments - athletically and otherwise - and I know that they will represent Darlington well in this competition."
Brass has played volleyball at Darlington for six years. In 2008, she helped the team secure the Region Championship, and this fall she was named to the Rome News-Tribune All-Area Team. Brass is a member of the Headmaster's List, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, FCA, Field and Stream Club, House Senate and Honor Council. She has won multiple awards at Darlington, including the AP Scholar with Honor Award, the E.L. Wright Scholastic Award for English II and the Wellesley College Book Award. This year's senior class president, Brass is also a Centre College Fellow and a Presbyterian College Fellow. She is the daughter of Dr. Barry and Nancy Brass of Rome.
Butler has played baseball for four years, football for two years, and also played basketball for one year. In 2009 alone, he helped lead the baseball team to the Elite Eight and the football team to the Final Four. His leadership on the field helped him earn nods as Rome News-Tribune Co-Player of the Year for baseball as well as Rome News-Tribune Defensive Player of the Year and GACA North Class A Defensive Player of the Year for football. Butler has signed to play baseball with the Georgia Institute of Technology next year. He is a National Academic All-American and a member of the "D" Club, FCA, the Young Republicans, Field and Stream Club, and the House Senate. He is the son of Lisa and Rhett Butler of Rome.
The John Pinson Outstanding Student Athlete Award, which recognizes two outstanding high school seniors in Rome and Floyd County with a $1,000 college scholarship, will be presented at the Rome-Floyd Sports Hall of Fame at Induction Banquet.
Candidates must have received local, area, regional or state recognition in athletics and be active in school and community organizations and activities. They must also have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and submit an essay about what it means to be a student-athlete. Each candidate will be scored on individual scholastic achievement, individual athletic achievement, school and community involvement, and essay.
