Two nominated for Outstanding Student Athlete Award

Seniors Bailey Brock and Brad Butler have been selected to represent Darlington in the Rome-Floyd Parks and Recreation Authority's John Pinson Outstanding Student Athlete Award competition.
“Bailey and Brad haven proven themselves as outstanding student-athletes and as exemplary students and role models both on and off the field,” said Athletic Director Bob Stinchcomb. “We are extremely proud of all of their accomplishments. I have no doubt that they will represent Darlington very well in this competition.”
Brock is a four-year starter in volleyball, basketball and lacrosse. As a team captain, she has led the volleyball team to four state berths. Additionally, her contributions to the ladies’ basketball team, of which she is also a team captain, have placed the Lady Tigers in the Top 10 in state playoffs for the last three years and, just last month, helped them win first place in the Rome News-Tribune Holiday Festival. Brock has been named to numerous All-Area and All-Region teams during her athletic career. An AP Scholar With Honor, she has taken 21 Honors and AP classes during the past four years and ranks second in her class academically. She is a member of the Cum Laude Society, National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Honor Council, “Y” Cabinet and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. A continuous member of the Headmaster’s List, she also serves as an Admission Tiger Expert, a spiritual life liaison and vice president of the House Senate. Brock has been awarded the Wellesley Book Award, the University of Georgia Merit Certificate, the Furman Scholar Award, the Wofford Scholar Award, the Centre College Fellow Award, and was also selected to be Darlington’s nominee for the Morehead-Cain Scholars Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She was also named Homecoming Queen this fall. An active member of the Rome and Floyd County Community, Brock has participated in the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce’s High School Leadership Rome program and volunteered her time with a variety of service organizations and events, including the Gary Tillman Memorial Race and the Empty Bowls Project. She is the daughter of Dawn and Harry Brock of Rome.
Butler has played football and baseball for four years. As a freshman quarterback, he helped lead the Tigers to the GHSA Class A Final Four, and during his high school football career, he helped the team secure three region championships and make three additional state football appearances. He has been named to numerous All-Area and All-Region teams in both sports. Butler has taken eight Honors and AP courses during the past four years and ranks 25th in his class. A continuous member of the Headmaster’s List, he is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society and Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society. He also serves as a huddle leader for Fellowship of Christian Athletes, serves as a camp counselor each summer at Darlington’s Football Camp, and received the C.J. Wyatt Sr. Award, given to the best male athlete in the school, as a sophomore. He is the son of Lisa and Rhett Butler of Rome.
The John Pinson Outstanding Student Athlete Award, which recognizes two outstanding high school seniors in Rome and Floyd County with a $1,000 college scholarship, will be presented at the Rome-Floyd Sports Hall of Fame at Induction Banquet on Feb. 25.
Candidates must have received local, area, regional or state recognition in athletics and be active in school and community organizations and activities. They must also have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and submit an essay about what it means to be a student-athlete. Each candidate will be scored on individual scholastic achievement, individual athletic achievement, school and community involvement, and essay.
