Travelers Seek Cultural Awareness Abroad

Skiing in France, studying in Spain, traipsing through England, searching for leprechauns in Ireland – these are some of the activities available through trips offered by Darlington this year. Most trips are open to students, faculty, family members, and friends of the School. “Darlington offers trips in hopes that a better understanding of the cultures is produced,” foreign language department Chair Randa Mixon said. “Each year new additions are being made. This can only increase our understanding of other ways of life which helps prepare our students for life.”
World-travelers can choose between London, England, or Chamonix, France during spring break and Ireland, Spain, or France this summer.
The annual spring break trip to England, led by Dean of Studies and College Guidance Sam Moss and Kathy O’Mara, Upper School art instructor, is almost booked. As of press time, 23 spaces have been filled and seven remain. This trip includes visits to Stonehenge and Oxford and plenty of opportunities for sightseeing. Chris Bettera, Upper and Middle schools French instructor, is hosting a skiing expedition to Chamonix, France, for experienced skiers only, during spring break. For more information contact Bettera at cbettera@darlingtonschool.org or 706-802-4365, ext. 590.
Darlington is offering two homestay trips abroad that emphasize language skills and travel: Spain and France, June 16 – July 7. These trips have a classroom focus and will stress cultural awareness. A trip to Ireland, with Donald Sweeney, Upper School physics instructor and Ireland native, might be a good fit for those who desire something off the beaten path. Arrange-ments are incomplete but a departure date in late May or early June is expected. “I am looking for fit people who will travel to the ‘real Ireland,’ those that can walk up to five miles a day,” Sweeney explained. This trip will last approximately 10 days and is open to Darlington faculty, staff, parents, and alumni. Travelers will visit Dublin, Cork, Killarney, Bunratty, and the West of Ireland. “Hopefully, we’ll bring back some leprechauns and their crocks of gold,” Sweeney added.
