Tour Peru with Burns and Barfield

Darlington students, families, friends and alumni are invited to spend spring break in Peru with faculty members Eva Marie Burns (’79) and Barbara Barfield. The trip will depart March 10 and return March 18, 2007.
“Last summer, I took a group of 35 students, parents and faculty members to Europe, and we had a great time seeing the world together,” said Burns, Middle and Upper School art teacher. “Peru will be a fabulous adventure as well. We will travel to Machu Picchu, go piranha fishing, shop in local markets and lots more.”
The first two days will be spent in Lima, the capital of South America. Group members will visit such sites as the Plaza Mayor, Government Palace, Torre Tagle Palace, the Cathedral, and the catacombs of San Francisco Convent. Afternoons will be spent exploring the city and the outdoor market, where visitors will find such items as handmade gold and silver jewelry, leather goods, and unusual souvenirs.
On March 12, the group will travel to Cusco, located 11,000 feet above sea level. Among the sites to see are the Plaza de Armas, the Cathedral, The Temple of the Sun, La Compania de Jesus and the Admiral’s Palace. Visitors may also visit the ruins of Tambomachay, Kenko (the religious center) and the fortress of Sacsayhuaman, among others.
The following day, the tour group will take an excursion down to Chinceros within the Sacred Valley and on to the fortress of Ollantaytambo. After lunch, they will experience the colorful town fair in Pisac and visit Awanakancha en route to the hotel room.
On March 14, visitors will experience Machu Picchu, an ancient Incan city and a fantastic view of the Andes Mountains. Here, visitors will enjoy a guided tour and may see the House of the Terrace Caretakers, Fountains, Temple of the Sun, the Palace of the Princess and the Royal Sector, as well as the Funeral Rock and many other “lost” ruins.
The following day, the group will set off into the Amazon rain forest to search for exotic wildlife such as Red-bellied Macaws, Black Caimans, Giant Otters, Hoatzins, and many types of monkeys, birds, fish and insects (including Giant Butterflies). Days may be spent canoeing the lake or hiking the trails.
The group will return to Lima March 17 for the flight to Atlanta.
The trip is hosted by Euro-American Tours, which offers specialized programs in travel and education. Cost is $2,990 per person, which includes insurance, transportation, roundtrip airfare, accommodations, meals and sightseeing expenses. Deadline for registration is Oct. 1.
