Tour Europe with Darlington School

Darlington students, parents, faculty, friends and alumni will have two opportunities to visit Europe in 2005 – one in the spring and one in the summer.
Sam Moss (’63), associate headmaster and dean of college guidance, and Lea Duncan, Lower and Middle School admissions officer, will lead Darlington’s annual England trip Feb. 25 through March 5. Those who miss the spring trip will have another opportunity to see Europe in the summer with Eva Marie Burns and Nancy Ivester. These Darlington teachers will escort a group through England, France, Italy, Austria and Germany May 23 to June 7.
Each day of the England trip will be busy with activity, and the first is no exception. After arriving in London on Saturday, Feb. 26, the group will travel to Windsor Castle and Stratford-Upon-Avon before checking into Arden Thistle Hotel to rest and have dinner. In the evening, they will attend Royal Shakespeare Company’s season finale of Two Gentlemen of Verona.
The next day will include tours of Warwick Castle, Shakespeare’s birthplace, and Anne Hathaway’s Cottage. Then on to Oxford, where the group will check into the five-star hotel, The Randolph, followed by dinner. That evening may include Evensong at Christ Church Cathedral, a movie or rest.
Monday’s itinerary will begin with a tour of Oxford and the Cotswolds and lunch in Bath. Then, they will tour the Roman Baths before settling in at the Francis Hotel.
Tuesday will bring visits to Stonehenge and London, which will include the Tower of London and the Crown Jewels. The group will check into Hotel Pastoria for the week.
Wednesday morning, they will visit the famed Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum before spending an afternoon at their leisure and attending the theatre in the evening.
Thursday, Moss and Duncan will lead walking tours of London, which could include the Changing of the Guard, Cabinet War Room and Westminster Abbey. That afternoon will consist of individualized tours and/or exploration. It will be optional to attend the theatre in the evening.
The last day in London is a “free day.” Group members might enjoy shopping in Knightsbridge and at Harrods’, afternoon tea and a night on the town.
Cost is $2,900 per person, which includes round-rip airfare, accommodations, full breakfasts throughout the trip and all dinners outside of London, all sightseeing per itinerary and entrance fees, transportation in and around London, tour guides and service charges and taxes. Cost is $3,147 per person, which includes round-trip airfare, accommodations, most meals, all sightseeing per itinerary and entrance fees, transportation, tour guides and more. A deposit of $395 is due at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 14. Final payment is due March 1. After this date, the price of the trip will increase.
