Tiger volleyball never breaks

With a summer packed full of activities, it seems that volleyball never breaks at Darlington. The School hosted its first-ever residential volleyball camp (NIKE Volleyball Camp, July 29-August 2) and Head Coach Jim Linos traveled to Hawaii to participate in a national senior all-star tournament. “We have high hopes this season as the varsity team re-tools rather than rebuilds, the junior varsity welcomes new blood, and the Middle School gears up for its second season,” Linos explained.
Despite the loss of six players who graduated, this year's team will once again compete for the area 4 AA/A championship. Behind the leadership of seniors and returning letter winners outside hitter Melissa Jarrell, defensive specialist Mimi Sumner, middle blocker Uri Seymour, and outside hitter Gates Minis, the Tigers are looking as strong as they have the last two years. Joining these four are two-time letter winner junior setter Alex Wysocki and sophomore, middle blocker Stephanie Dupree. Wysocki will continue her assault on the state career ace record this year as she enters the year ninth all-time with 173 aces (she also holds a tie for 4th in aces in a game, and ninth for aces in a season and aces per game). “Juniors Whitney Smith, opposite, and Meggin Roberts, outside hitter, will be joining the Varsity team this year after their wonderful leadership of the junior varsity team the last two seasons,” Linos said.
Other returning players who will contribute to the program again this year at either the varsity or junior varsity level are middle blockers Laura Bennett, Jackie Schiavone and Nnedike Ugoji; setter Ali Patey and opposite, Amanda McElroy; defensive specialists Judy Gardiner and Marquita Searcy; and outside hitters Leslie Goldberg, Meghan Howell, and Dany Daly. Newcomers Cassie McCoy and Kristen Rachels are welcomed additions to the program this season.
Coming up from last year's first-ever Darlington Middle School team to this year's junior varsity competion will be Liz Norman, Miriah Martin, and Casey Jakob. Alicia Wright, Caitlan Murray, Michelle Picon, Robyn Brass, Betsy Smith and Polly Roberts will form the building blocks for this season's Middle School squad.
Also, Doug Braden is joining the program as head junior varsity volleyball coach and assistant coach to both the varsity and Middle School teams.
Practices for the Middle School (rising sixth through eighth grades) will begin the first day of classes, August 19, at 3:45 p.m. Head Volleyball Coach Jim Linos encourages the Darlington community to attend a match or two this season.
